It’s been a tough time for M-1 Challenge Lightweight Champion, Daniel Weichel, in the lead up to defending his crown. Originally Daniel was challenged by Yuri Ivlev, with their title bout being the main drawcard for M-1 Challenge 32. But Yuri broke his hand in training and Daniel was informed he would then be defending his title against Black House fighter, Thiago ‘Minu’ Meller.
This meant Daniel’s time preparing for the southpaw combat-sambo specialist had to be scrapped as he then focused his training for the orthodox BJJ specialist. Fortunately Weichel is an incredibly adaptable athlete and an incredibly well-rounded fighter; however now Meller has been scratched and Daniel will once again fight in the co-main event at a Fedor bout.
Fans last saw Daniel Weichel in blazing action when he knocked out Jose Figueroa to seize the M-1 Challenge Lightweight Title on November 20, 2011 at M-1 Global: Fedor vs. Monson. Now it appears Daniel will have to sit out M-1 Challenge 32 and watch the Damkovsky vs. Khamanaev battle to discover who his new opponent might be.
Knucklepit was fortunate to catch up with Daniel Weichel and chat with him about his upcoming title defence.

On May 16, 2012, two of M-1 Global’s most exciting fighters will be doing battle at the Crocus City Arena in Moscow when M-1’s Lightweight Champion, Daniel Weichel (28-7), defends his title against the highly regarded Yuri Ivlev (18-7).
When Daniel ‘The Weasel’ Weichel and Yuri ‘Cable Guy’ Ivlev last went to battle together at M-1 Challenge XXI on October 28, 2010, Daniel brought the bout to an end at 2.24 into the third round when he stopped Yuri via a TKO. Weichel has since described the match as the hardest fight of his career.
After the first Weichel vs. Ivlev , Daniel went on to defeat Magomedrasul Khasbulaev via triangle choke at M-1 Challenge XXIII, then scored a unanimous decision over Beau Baker at M-1 XXVI, before KO-ing Jose Figueroa to become M-1’s Lightweight Champion at M-1 Global’s Fedor v. Monson in November, 2011.
Weichel and Ivlev are both hard, hard men and possess outstanding stand-up, takedown and submission skills, so their title showdown at M-1 Challenge XXXII in Russia is set to be a classic fight. Also on the card will be Weichel’s training partner, Mairbek Taisumov who faces off with Marat Gafurov.
Daniel kindly chatted with Knucklepit about his recent crowning and the upcoming M-1 Challenge.

On July 8, M-1 Challenge XXVI: Bennett vs. Garner will be coming LIVE on Showtime from The Hangar in Costa Mesa, California. Germany’s lightweight sensation, Daniel Weichel, was originally slotted to face M-1 Lightweight Champion, Jose Figueroa, but an injury during training forced the champ out of the title match.
Stepping up to the plate to lock horns with Daniel Weichel (26-7) is former NCAA Division 1 collegiate wrestler, Beau Baker (8-4), who possesses a huge heart and a titanium jaw. Beau commenced wrestling at age 10, and was a two-time State High School Champion in the Volunteer State of Tennessee. Baker was keen to volunteer for this war with Weichel.
Possessing exceptional positioning and scrambling skills, Beau has been focusing on his BJJ abilities and intends upsetting the applecart on July 8. He gained a wealth of experience from his recent bout with Alexander Sarnavskiy, dusted himself off, and says he’s on the boil for a showdown with Daniel Weichel.
Knucklepit caught up with Beau a week prior to this highly anticipated battle.
Daniel, how did you earn the nickname ‘Blackjack’?

M-1 Global has a reputation for presenting epic showdowns in the MMA arena, and Daniel Weichel vs. Jose Figueroa on July 8 is expected to be another classic battle.
Daniel is an explosive fighter, both in the stand-up and on the ground. Against southpaw Yuri Ivlev at M-1 Challenge XXI, Daniel unleashed flying knees and Thai-clinch knees, smashing Yuri’s nose and cutting deeply into his forehead before winning by TKO.
Weichel has knockout power in both fists and seems to effortlessly crash-tackle his opponents with either single-or double-leg takedowns, before unleashing savage g’n’p. He is also very capable working from his back, as displayed in his match against Magomedrasul Khasbulaev at M-1 Challenge XXIII.
Knucklepit had the pleasure of chatting with Daniel Weichel about his upcoming title challenge against Jose Figueroa.
Daniel, were you born in Michelstadt, Hessen, Germany?
Yes, I was born in Michelstadt on the 22nd of November in 1984.
