Held at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, Affliction: Day of Reckoning presented another huge card that definitely delivered the goods.  Ring announcer Michael Williams did an outstanding job, and it was great to see Big John McCarthy and Herb Dean sharing some of the refereeing duties again.

In earlier matches:

Antonio Nogueira def. Vladimir Matyushenko by TKO – 3.12, Round Two.
Brett Cooper def. Patrick Speight by TKO – 4.10, Round Two.
Albert Rios def. Antonio Duarte by unanimous decision.
LC Davis def. Bao Quach by unanimous decision.

The Battles

Dan Lauzon (5’10” 155.5 lb) vs. Bobby Green (5’10” 155.5 lb)
– Lightweight
Referee: Herb Dean

Southpaw Dan backed away from Bobby’s left and right punches.
4.54: Bobby let loose with a left hook and Dan matched it with a right hook.
4.51: Dan connected with a left, right, left combo before they clinched.  Bobby avoided the takedown by locking on a guillotine, then released the choke to unload a barrage of knuckles.
4.35: Green slammed home eight knees to Lauzon’s body.
4.06: Lauzon missed with two left haymakers.
3.56: Green backed Lauzon into the corner with a kick that was deemed a groin shot, and Herb called time out.  On replay, the kick appeared to land on the lower stomach rather than the groin area.  Ring commentator Jimmy Smith said, “I think that’s a much needed break for Lauzon.  I think he was backing up when he was kicked to the groin.”
3.42: Dan went for a superman punch and a high kick before failing with the takedown.  The pair clinched and fell to the ground as Bobby took half guard.
3.26: Bobby stood, then dropped leather on his downed opponent before Dan also stood, with Bobby taking his back and slamming Dan into the floor via a suplex.
3.10: They stood and Bobby slipped whilst attempting a high kick.  Dan charged in to wrap Bobby in a triangle, but Bobby shrugged off the hold and pounded from guard.
2.22: They traded until Green’s knee strike was called a groin shot after Lauzon covered up and dropped to his knees.  The replay looked dubious.
Tito Ortiz said, “I really think that Lauzon may be putting on a little theatrics there.  I don’t think the strike was that hard.  It looked like he hit him right on top of the thigh – maybe on the inside, but I think he’s doing a great acting job tonight.”
Bobby Green waited in his corner and shook his head as Lauzon took more time out.
Play resumed and they exchanged before Lauzon claimed yet another kick was to his groin.  Bobby protested and the commentators again questioned the low blow, remarking, “I think he’s (Lauzon) milking it.”  Two points were deducted from Green.
1.32: Bobby had Dan backed into the corner and tugged on his left leg to take him down, then stood over the downed Dan and pounded away.
1.03: Dan went for a leg lock.
0.33: Bobby escaped the submission attempt; however Dan caught him with a rear naked choke.

There was a mixed response from the crowd when Lauzon’s hand was raised after the fight.

Result: Dan Lauzon by RNC – 4.55, Round One.

Paul Buentello (6’2” 244 lb) vs. Kirill Sidelnikov (5’11” 229.5 lb)
– Heavyweight
Referee: Big John McCarthy

Round One
Both men were testing the water with jabs and throwing the occasional right hand.
4.38: Kirill aggressively backed Paul into the corner where they shared a brief flutter of leather.
4.26: Kirill dispatched a right leg kick and a right cross.
4.19: They clinched, with Paul against the ropes.
4.14: They parted after close-quarter knees, elbows and fists were exchanged.
3.28: Sidelnikov inside leg-kicked and Buentello countered with his right hand.
3.21: Sidelnikov backed Buentello up with a right.
3.15: They traded and clinched.
2.20: They broke free.
2.13: Buentello high-kicked.
2.08: Sidelnikov inside leg-kicked.
1.37: The pair tied up after a spate of jab jousting.  Paul was using his six-inch reach advantage to jab and right-uppercut Kirill.
1.15: They broke free and a mouse was clearly visible under Kirill’s left eye.
0.40: The pair clinched up to the bell.
The big screen switched to Fedor Emelianenko casually entering the Honda Center – he could easily have been mistaken for a shopper perusing the stalls in a marketplace.

Round Two
Paul kept busy with his thumping jabs – each punch was power packed and proved a difficult barrier for Kirill to infiltrate.
2.58: Kirill leg-kicked.
2.50: They traded and Sidelnikov forced Buentello back with a thunderous right hand.  He unloaded a barrage of fists that sent Buentello into the corner before they tied up.
1.55: The pair parted.
1.36: Sidelnikov shot for Buentello’s leg; Buentello sprawled and fell onto Sidelnikov’s back, then chose to resume the vertical battle.
1.26: Paul tagged Kirill with a left, right, left combo – the latter whiplashing Kirill’s head back, but the brave Russian kept coming.
1.16: Paul worked his jab/right uppercut combo.
1.01: Paul whiplashed Kirill’s head with another powerhouse jab.
0.58: Kirill sent up a high kick that whizzed past Paul’s face.
0.34: Kirill ducked under an incoming high kick.
After two 5-minute rounds, Paul Buentello’s jabs were still packing dynamite.

Round Three
Buentello’s jabs to the head and body were unrelenting.
3.22: Sidelnikov tried to close the gap and was punished by Buentello’s uppercut.
2.24: They tied up in the corner and collapsed to the canvas, then stood back up.
1.56: They exchanged jabs, with Buentello’s more powerful hand blasting Sidelnikov back a number of paces.  Buentello’s jabs were crushing rock-breakers.
1.49: Paul leg-kicked and Kirill dropped to the floor and Big John called time out to refit Kirill’s mouthguard.  The crowd booed at the stoppage – it wasn’t their mouth or their butt in the ring.  Moments later, Big John halted play and the ring physician stopped the fight.
The 20-year-old Sidelnikov was tough as nails, but the more experienced Buentello was a sledgehammer.

Result: Paul Buentello by TKO – 4.18, Round Three.

Renato Sobral (6’1” 204 lb) vs. Rameau Sokoudjou (6’0” 205 lb)
– Light Heavyweight
Referee: Big John McCarthy

Round One
Leather was exchanged before Babalu leg-kicked and shot in for the takedown; however Rameau sprawled and shrugged him off.
4.05: They banged and tied up.  Babalu took Rameau down, but Rameau sprang to his feet and the pair locked up against the ropes.
3.25: Big John restarted the game.
3.03: They embraced and Sobral tugged Sokoudjou to the mats before Sokoudjou worked elbows and knuckles from Sobral’s guard.
1.41: The pair stood.
1.39: Babalu was after the takedown; eventually it was Rameau who swept Babalu to the floor.  They climbed to their feet and clinched.
0.30: Big John separated them.

Round Two
4.51: Sobral’s head jolted from a Sokoudjou uppercut, and Sobral responded with a salvo of punches, followed by a takedown at 4.29, when he g’n’ped from guard.
3.20: Big John restarted them at center ring after Sokoudjou slid his head outside the ropes.
3.09: Babalu took half guard and g’n’ped before getting Rameau’s back and applying an anaconda choke. Rameau tapped.

Result: Renato ‘Babalu’ Sobral by anaconda choke – 2.36, Round Two.

Vitor Belfort (6’0” 184 lb) vs. Matt Lindland (6’0” 186 lb)
– Middleweight
Referee: Dr. Nelson Hamilton

4.48: Southpaw Belfort probed with his right hand, then leg-kicked.
4.30: Matt moved in with a left and Vitor exploded, slamming with a counter right, and an overhand left that downed Matt, before Vitor g’n’ped with a right-hand volley.
This was a replay of the David Terrell KO of Lindland

Result: Vitor Belfort by KO – 0.37, Round One.

Josh Barnett (6’3” 248 lb) vs. Gilbert Yvel (6’2” 240 lb)
– Heavyweight
Referee: Herb Dean

Round One
4.40:
Gilbert side-stepped a lunging right from Josh.
4.15: Gilbert leg-kicked.
4.02: He high-kicked; Josh caught the leg and used it to take Gilbert down before getting half guard.
3.40: Barnett initiated his g’n’p game.
2.55: Barnett went for a kimura on Yvel’s left arm; Yvel resisted well and fired powerful shots from below.
1.52: Barnett took side control.
1.38: Yvel had Barnett back in half guard.
1.31: Josh tried the kimura again, but Gilbert was immune to the hold.
1.11: Josh got the mount.
0.36: Gilbert rolled and surrendered his back, then covered up well before rolling onto his back.
0.08: Gilbert escaped from below and the pair stood.

Round Two
Yvel attacked Barnett’s body with a kick and fists, causing Barnett to clinch and take him down.  Barnett was not interested in standing and banging it out with the Dutchman.
4.45: Barnett assumed half guard, then side control.
3.46: He looked for the kimura again.
3.20: Barnett gave up the ghost and adopted the g’n’p approach.
3.02: He mounted Yvel.
2.32: Gilbert covered up, kept his head moving from side to side, and struck back with powerful blows from underneath.  He was proving to be a difficult opponent for Josh to finish, and at times had Josh covering up whilst on top.
0.51: Gilbert connected with jarring fists that whipped Josh’s head back.
0.22: A frustrated Barnett looked for a neck crank, then appeared to set his sights on an arm bar.  Yvel seized the opportunity to slip into guard and began g’n’p-ing.  He stood and dropped a series of blows on Barnett before the bell sounded.

Round Three
4.43: Josh leg-kicked as Gilbert countered with a combo of fists.  Josh latched onto Gilbert and scored a big takedown.
4.23: Barnett went from half guard to mount, before beating Yvel with g’n’p and forcing him to tap.

Result: Josh Barnett by tapout due to g’n’p – 3.05, Round Three.

Fedor Emelianenko (6’0” 230 lb) vs. Andrei Arlovski (6’4” 237 lb)
– Heavyweight
Referee: Big John McCarthy

Andrei Arlovski comes out full of beans and sporting a double-backed US/Belarus flag.  Fedor Emelianenko strolls out gazing at the floor.  When Big John McCarthy calls both men to center ring, Fedor is still looking down at the canvas, taking the stare-down expression literally.  Interestingly, the stats reveal both men have a 74-inch reach, despite Andrei being four inches taller.  Fedor’s fighting style is listed as sambo/judo, whilst Andrei’s is sambo/kickboxing.
Andrei leg-kicks; Fedor attempts to catch the foot but misses.  Fedor throws a left and a right; Andrei responds with his own left-right combo that forces Fedor back.
4.38: Arlovski leg-kicks.  Both fighters throw menacing mitts that don’t quite find the mark.
4.29: Arlovski ducks away from Emelianenko’s lunging left.
4.15: Arlovski leg-kicks.
4.07: Emelianenko sends a left hand sailing over Arlovski’s head as Andrei delivers a right body shot.
4.03: Fedor steps back from an inside leg kick.
3.59: Fedor steps back from a leg kick.
3.52: There’s another flurry and Fedor delivers a powerful left to the body.
3.44: Andrei avoids Fedor’s incoming left and counters with a right uppercut before they clinch.  Andrei’s back is to the ropes and Fedor knees to the body.
3.33: Arlovski tries to sweep Emelianenko, but the takedown is resisted.
3.29: Emelianenko knees to the body.
3.23: Andrei thwarts a sweep from Fedor.
3.17: Fedor knees to the body.
3.10: Andrei returns the knee.
2.56: Emelianenko throws a short left hand into Arlovski’s midsection.
2.48: Arlovski knees to the body.
2.39: Emelianenko throws left uppercuts.
2.30: Big John breaks the clinch.
2.12: Andrei hurls a left and a right.
1.58: He lands a right cross.
1.55: Andrei jabs to the body.
1.53: He throws a left to the body and a right to the head.
1.51: Arlovski front-kicks to the body, which propels Emelianenko into the ropes.  Fedor bounces back off the ropes as Andrei closes in with a left leaping knee.  Both of his feet are off the ground as Fedor cracks him with a skull-rattling overhand right.  Andrei is out before he hits the canvas.

Result: Fedor Emelianenko by KO – 3.34, Round One.

DAY OF RECKONING

Part 4

The Two Superpowers of MMA

February 11, 2009

After the huge response to Affliction: Day of Reckoning, there appeared some negative chat on the internet regarding the future of Affliction’s involvement in MMA events.

But talk is cheap, or as Fedor Emelianenko’s head trainer, Vladimir Mihailovich Voronov, so aptly put it: “With us, our women are the ones who talk a lot. And the men are the ones who get into a ring and perform.”

So Knucklepit.com decided to check in with the Chief Operating Officer for Affliction Entertainment, Mr. Michael Cohen, to clear the water.

Michael, have you heard any of the gossip regarding Affliction’s future?

“There are some rumors circulating throughout the internet that Affliction will cease to exist either before or after the next upcoming event.  Tom Atencio has stated to other reporters that for some reason, instead of enjoying the success of Affliction’s Day of Reckoning, they choose to create rumors that are factually inaccurate.  Affliction, thanks to Donald Trump, M-1 Global, Golden Boy, and Affliction Clothing, is a very well-capitalized company.  “Trump’s Affliction Entertainment will continue to promote fights for a long time to come.”

Do you think the rumors are the product of misguided loyalty?

“I’m always in favor of loyal fans, whether it’s a fan to a league or a fan of mixed martial arts.  I appreciate the loyalty, but this goes beyond loyalty: What it is… it is sheer stupidity.  The plain and simple fact is that the Day of Reckoning was a tremendous success.  What makes no sense are these fans of UFC who think they can stop Affliction’s momentum by generating these ridiculous rumors.

But then there’s also a lot of internet talk that is anti-UFC.

“I’m not happy about that either.  Nor does it make me happy when there are anti-Dana White statements.  Dana White, UFC, Zuffa, the Fertittas… Thanks to them and their persistence, we have this fantastic platform, and that’s the whole sport of mixed martial arts.  Had they not accomplished what they did, mixed martial arts would not be where it is today.”

“Now there is a competitor out there – and I believe competition is good.  Unfortunately, they are not the alone any longer.  Moreover, the competitor company is headed by Donald Trump, M-1 Global and Golden Boy.  Trump’s Affliction Entertainment is producing great events and getting amazing responses.  The intent is to continue producing these fabulous events and to continue to promote our fighters.  It’s that clear.”

Michael, who benefits most from having two superpowers in the world of MMA?

“It’s always the fighters and the fans who are the ultimate winners here. Everyone wins out: the fighters, the fans, the leagues, television… If Affliction were to cease to continue promoting fights, the fighters and the fans would truly be the big losers.  Trump’s Affliction is not going anywhere – mark my words on that.”

DAY OF RECKONING

Part 3
Michael Cohen Chats with Knucklepit

January 13, 2009

It’s just under a fortnight away from one of MMA’s biggest events, Affliction: Day of Reckoning, and Knucklepit.com has caught up with Chief Operating Officer for Affliction Entertainment, Michael Cohen, to get some inside info on this upcoming ultimate-fighting extravaganza.

The excitement is evident in Michael’s voice at the prospect of hosting an even bigger show than Affliction: Banned, with the main event being between the undisputed king of MMA, Fedor Emelianenko, and former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski.  “Affliction: Day of Reckoning is going to be a fantastic event and is being well received by both diehard and casual fans,” says Mr. Cohen.

When Andrei Arlovski was UFC Heavyweight Champion, and he seemed unstoppable, everyone was saying that Andrei wouldn’t be the true world champion until he could defeat Fedor Emelianenko.  And Freddie Roach is raving about the ‘new’ Andrei Arlovski.  So it would appear this WAMMA World Heavyweight Title match-up was made in heaven.

But Michael Cohen isn’t too concerned about predictions.  “I don’t have an opinion as to Freddie Roach’s comments, but Fedor and Andrei both certainly have incredible punching power; they both have incredible ground techniques; they’re just amazing fighters and it’s going to be a very entertaining fight.

“I definitely would not count out Andrei Arlovski, as some are doing.  At the same time, Fedor Emelianenko is such a fantastic fighter that this has all the makings to be an incredible event.”

Of Affliction: Day of Reckoning’s main event, Randy Couture told Knucklepit: “That should be a very interesting fight.  Andrei is looking as sharp as I’ve ever seen him look.  He’s got all the tools to make it an interesting fight.  He’s a great athlete – very explosive, and has tremendous striking, probably the most pure boxing in mixed martial arts.  And Fedor has such an unorthodox striking style.  It should be an interesting clash.”  And Michael Cohen agrees there seems to be more growing support for Andrei’s case.

“Well, I’m certainly nobody to argue with the likes of Randy Couture.  I happen to agree with Randy.   Andrei Arlovski looks fantastic: He’s in great shape.  The few times that I have reached out to him, he has been training incredibly hard and is totally dedicated to coming into this fight in the best shape of his life, and his skills have never been more fine-tuned.

“I go back to the point I previously made… Yet he is still fighting a phenom in Fedor in that his entire game is always on.  So when Andrei enters the ring he will certainly be aware that his opponent, Fedor Emelianenko, is coming in at his top game as well.”

Michael, apparently Fedor’s camp has been very quiet since he lost to Bulgarian Blagol Ivanov at the Combat Sambo World Championships last November.  Do you think Fedor is likely to use Affliction: Day of Reckoning as an opportunity to make a physical statement to the world?

“I don’t put much into that sambo tournament.  Fedor will step into the ring in typical Fedor style, which is fully prepared, in fantastic shape, and ready to do battle.”

Gilbert Yvel shook the foundations at PRIDE, and at Cage Rage in the UK.  Has he been cleared by the Californian Athletic Commission to lock horns with Josh Barnett?

“He has been, subject of course to normal testing and proper weight compliance.  Gilbert Yvel is clear to challenge Josh Barnett.”

Gilbert Yvel is an animal in the ring.  He’s amazing.

“This is yet another example of the great work of Tom Atencio in matching up fighters who will put on a spectacular show.  I too am a fan of Gilbert Yvel.  Gilbert is a fantastic athlete, and, as you correctly put it, is an animal in the ring; however the ‘animal’ is now stepping in front of the ‘Baby Face Assassin’.  Josh Barnett is not a newcomer to the sport, is a fantastic striker, has an incredible ground game, and will also provide a fight that the fans will marvel at.”

The undercard is also saturated with outstanding talent, including Vladimir Matyushenko vs. Antonio Nogueira.  And Nogueira is coming off a loss to Frank Mir, so he should be out to change the tide against ‘The Janitor’.  To have the entire card so chock-a-block with high-caliber fights is a great sign considering these are still early days for Affliction events, isn’t it?

“I truly agree that the fighters who will be appearing in the Affiction: Day of Reckoning event are each uniquely fantastic athletes and are matched up very well against their opponents.  This card has no meatballs.  Every one of these fighters has the capability to knock out or submit his opponent.  Every one of these fighters is training incredibly hard and is looking forward to showcasing his talent on January 24.”

Fedor also has his training partner, Kirill Sidelnikov, on the Affliction card opposite Paul Buentello, and the twenty-year-old Kirill is expected to be weighing in at around 195 against Paul Buentello, who usually walks in at 245lbs.  Is it going to be raining hammers and nails in that bout?

“It’s going to be a huge fight.  Let’s also not forget that Fedor – six-plus inches shorter and forty or fifty pounds lighter than Tim Sylvia – had a positive result that evening.  Now I’m not a betting man so I would not take odds on either Kirill Sidelnikov or Paul Buentello.

“My understanding is that Kirill has insane submitting techniques, while Paul Buentello certainly outweighs him.  One would look for Paul to stand and knock Kirill out, and I suspect it’s not going to be an easy night for either fighter.”

Chris Horodecki vs. Dan Lauzon is another huge bout.  Most of these matches could be main events in their own right.

“Well, as I said in a previous answer, Tom Atencio did a phenomenal job in both selecting fighters for this card, and in matching them up.”

And Tito Ortiz is going to be in the commentator’s seat?

“Also appearing at the event will be the antics of Scott Ferrell (Howard Stern Radio) and Chuck Zito (HBO series Oz, This Thing of Ours ).”

Is Affliction: Day of Reckoning going to be aired in Australia?

“We’re working on that.”

Rumor has it that 29-year-old Donald Trump, Jr. is now playing a very active role in the Affliction events.   How much of your time, Michael, is taken up working on Affliction events?

“Don Trump, Jr. has taken a very active role in this Day of Reckoning event to ensure its success.  As we continue to grow, allocating more time has become necessary.  I spend a tremendous amount of time with Don Trump, Jr. – who has taken over the reins from Mr. Trump and is acting as the executive on this project – which is due to the success and momentum of the company.”

Affliction: Day of Reckoning

Knucklepit.com is talking with the Chief Operating Officer for Affliction Entertainment, Michael Cohen, to clarify what fans can expect from Affliction 2.

[Originally set for October 11, 2008, at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Affliction: Day of Reckoning was to be headlined by Andrei Arlovski vs. Josh Barnett, with other bouts including Chris Horodecki vs. Dan Lauzon, and Jay Hieron vs. Drew Fickett.]

More recently, there has been speculation on the internet that Affliction 2 will take place on January 24, 2009, at the Honda Center in Anaheim.  So we decided to ask Mr. Cohen to verify a few details for readers.

Michael, can you shed some light on the date for Affliction 2, please?

“At the present moment we are not releasing a date as we have not concluded the agreement with the venue.  But once that agreement is signed, I’ll be happy to provide you with the full details.”

So are the websites fishing a little when they state January 24 as the set date?

“There is certainly a lot of rumor as to the date, and January 24 is one of the dates we are looking at.”

Is Donald Trump still as keen to make Affliction MMA events happen?

“Absolutely.”

Michael, can you give a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to the list of proposed fights, please:

Fedor Amelianenko vs. Andrei Arlovski?

“It’s certainly something we’re considering: We think that would be a great fight.”

Have contracts been signed?

“We have contracts with both fighters, but the match-ups have not been decided.”

Can I go through the list of other bouts for you to say yes or no?  Or are none of the bouts set in concrete at this stage?

“Nothing is set in concrete.  Let me explain: What we have been concentrating on over the last month is the development of Affliction Entertainment for the long-term position in the world of mixed martial arts.  It’s not about one fight; it’s not about one fight card or evening.  It’s about the longevity of Affliction Entertainment.

“In the course of the last month, we have announced a strategic relationship with Golden Boy Promotions, M-1 Global, as well as CBS/Showtime, where Andrei Arlovski was recently featured on an Elite FC fight card against Roy ‘Big Country’ Nelson, in which Andrei was victorious.  We feel these strategic co-promote alliances are what will catapult Mr. Trump’s Affliction Entertainment company to the top.”

Are we likely to see Tim Sylvia and Mike Whitehead back at Affliction?

“They still are with Affliction.”

Will Ozzy Osbourne provide the musical head-banging for Day of Reckoning?

“We do speak to Ozzy on a regular basis and we’re all big fans, so we would certainly love to see him perform at one of the events.”

So he might not be at Affliction 2?

“I don’t know if I’d say it’s not going to be the next one… Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of information that we can provide at this point in time.”

No worries, Michael.  Does Fedor’s hand appear to be healing okay?

“Yes, it’s healing very well.”

Can fans expect Affliction 2 to be as big as Affliction 1?

“No… It will be bigger!”

Michael, is there anything you’d like to add?

“Fight fans can rest assured that Mr. Trump’s Affliction Entertainment will promote the best fights for the benefit of the fans.”

Sept 10, 2008

After reading many MMA websites’ claims that Affliction II: Day of Reckoning had been canceled, Knucklepit.com contacted the Chief Operating Officer for Affliction Entertainment, Michael Cohen, for the real juice.

“You’re going to see a lot of articles regarding the October 11 event being postponed.  I cannot tell you the reasons for the postponement at this exact moment, but I promise you, within the next two weeks there is going to be a press announcement that is going to change the dynamics of the world of mixed martial arts,” says Mr. Cohen.

“And unlike other statements that have been made, claiming the same thing, we will not be announcing a ‘toy deal’.  This announcement will change the face of mixed martial arts.  And I promise you that the Affliction Entertainment announcement will be substantially more important to MMA fans around the world than a toy deal.”

Originally set for October 11, 2008, at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Affliction II was to be headlined by Andrei Arlovski vs. Josh Barnett, with other bouts including Chris Horodecki vs. Dan Lauzon, and Jay Hieron vs. Drew Fickett.
